Discord
Discord is a communication platform for running games online. During a session, you chat in a voice channel, post handouts and images in text channels, and use screen sharing for maps or character sheets. The server keeps everything organised between sessions with separate channels for rules, table talk, and scheduling. Dice bots can roll in chat. A professional Game Master typically sets up a private server and permissions so you can join and play without hassle.
Getting set up is straightforward. You create an account, accept an invite link, and join from the desktop app, the mobile app, or a modern browser. There is no cost for players to use Discord. A headset with a mic ensures clear audio, and a webcam is optional. Most actions are just one click, like joining the correct voice channel or opening the dice channel, so new players settle in quickly.
Many games combine Discord voice with other tools. A professional Game Master might stream a virtual tabletop over screen sharing, or share links for character sheets, safety tools, and music. If you want to compare options for online play, see online play platforms.
How to use Discord
Before the game, create a Discord account and install the desktop or mobile app, or plan to use a current browser. Your Game Master will send an invite link to a private server with the start time and channel names. Click the link, accept the invite, and allow mic or camera access if prompted. In User Settings, test your microphone, select input and output devices, and choose voice activation or push to talk. At the start time, open the server and join the designated voice channel. Use headphones to minimise echo.

Common questions
Do I need a Discord account or Nitro to join?
You need a free Discord account to join the game. Nitro is optional; you do not need it for voice, text, or basic screen sharing. Your Game Master will send you a server link before the session.
Does it work on my phone or in a browser?
You can use the desktop app on Windows or macOS, the mobile app on iOS or Android, or the web app in a modern browser. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox are recommended for voice and screen sharing. If you encounter issues with the browser, consider using the desktop app instead.
Do I need a webcam or a particular headset?
A webcam is optional. Use a microphone and wear headphones to avoid echo. Discord provides push-to-talk and built-in noise suppression for clearer audio. You can also type in the text channel if your microphone is having issues.
Is Discord appropriate for a company team event?
Yes. A professional Game Master can manage a private server with custom roles and channel permissions for your team. Some company networks may restrict Discord or screen sharing, so it's advisable to test from the office beforehand or explore other online play options here.
