Western

Western sessions evoke sun-baked horizons and quiet streets that can erupt into gunfire in an instant. You might find yourself escorting a stagecoach, pursuing a fugitive across desolate landscapes, or staking a claim before rivals encroach. A whispered conversation in a saloon can escalate into a tense poker bluff. A dust storm or an empty canteen can be just as lethal as a pistol. Justice is local, choices are tough, and whether you wear a badge or a bandana will matter when the town rings the bell.

It works at the table because the stakes are clear and the tools are straightforward. Horses, maps, a six-shooter, and a plan. Scenes unfold quickly, giving everyone their moment in the spotlight, from the quick-draw shooter to the smooth-talking drifter. Beginners and mixed-experience groups grasp it immediately. Families appreciate it when the tone remains light and bloodless. Team events thrive on the collaboration in posse play, negotiations, and split-second decisions. Veterans excel in tense standoffs and sandbox towns with real consequences.

Our Game Masters run Westerns in Deadlands, Savage Worlds, Fate Core, Call of Cthulhu with Down Darker Trails, and rules-light indie games like Frontier Scum. You choose the flavour. Classic cattle-drive adventure, gritty survival, or a weird west filled with occult secrets. We can adjust the level of violence and realism, keep it light-hearted, or delve into moral ambiguity. Select a table that suits your playstyle by browsing different GM playstyles, then saddle up for a story tailored to you.

Common questions

What distinguishes a Western from a historical adventure?

Western play focuses on frontier towns, local law, personal codes, and practical issues. You ride, track, and bargain as much as you shoot. Technology is limited, so water, ammunition, and horses are essential. Conflicts revolve around land, cattle, and community rather than courts or grand politics. Duels, poker tables, and dusty roads set the scene. Historical adventures can span various eras and institutions. Western maintains a strong 19th-century frontier atmosphere. If you're interested in occult twists, a professional Game Master can also run a Weird West theme.

Which game system is best suited for a Western?

Fast and flexible rules are ideal for quick draws and chases. Savage Worlds offers fast-paced action and unpredictable shootouts. Deadlands introduces weird west horror and gadgets. Fate Core is perfect for character-driven drama and negotiated stakes. Call of Cthulhu with Down Darker Trails focuses on investigation. Frontier Scum is gritty and has minimal rules. If you're uncertain, a professional Game Master can suggest the best fit. You can also explore options on the game systems overview.

Can you keep gunfights suitable for families or children?

Yes. A professional Game Master can adjust the tone to PG or suitable for all ages. Gunfights can involve contests of nerve, disarms, and shots that damage equipment rather than people. Outcomes can be non-lethal or fade to black. Gameplay can focus on chases, roping, scouting, and clever problem-solving rather than body counts. Poker scenes can use tokens instead of gambling. Boundaries are established before play using safety tools, ensuring the Western theme remains comfortable for families and school groups.

What can I expect from a one-shot Western session?

A one-shot typically lasts 3 to 4 hours. You can choose pre-generated characters or create them quickly. The group receives a clear task, such as guarding a coach, tracking down a rustler, or resolving a dispute. Scenes involve travel, tense conversations, a chase or raid, followed by a showdown or negotiation that addresses the town’s issue. Simple rules ensure quick turns. Expect engaging maps and props. It works both in person and online, with visual aids for duels and chases. See supported tools on the online play overview.

What players have to say

  • Tom was brilliant! He was really great with the kids and very patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The children asked the next day when we would be doing this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did an excellent job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a significant portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't fully understand how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his deep knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided a brilliant experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was really engaging. I got a game as a present for my boyfriend, who is very keen on it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was an excellent GM who adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided, as they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left the game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another session with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players fully immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A nice and clear first experience with D&D. Amber was able to explain and guide the game effectively, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack routes was an enjoyable activity and provided great insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.
