Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound

Soulbound is the official roleplaying game set in Games Workshop’s Age of Sigmar, published by Cubicle 7. You take on the role of champions from across the Mortal Realms, whose souls are mystically bound into a single fellowship. From the very first session, you feel powerful and essential, using bold abilities and magic to stand firm against Chaos. It’s loved for its grand, cinematic action, meaningful teamwork, and the freedom to fight, explore, and protect bright bastions of hope in a perilous world.

A session feels like a dramatic mission: scouting strange ruins, negotiating with aelf courts, or standing atop city walls as armies clash below. It accommodates 2 to 6 players, catering to both complete beginners and seasoned tacticians. Birthday groups and corporate teams appreciate the clear objectives and cooperative focus. A professional Game Master manages the lore and maintains a brisk pace, allowing you to concentrate on daring choices and unforgettable moments. Meet our Game Masters here: professional Game Masters.

How to play Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound

You roll pools of six-sided dice based on your traits and skills. The Game Master sets a target number and how many successes you need. Each die that meets or exceeds the number counts as a success, and extra successes enhance damage or special effects. Turns are quick: move, strike, cast, aid an ally, spend resources, react to danger. The system rewards teamwork and bold plans, so discussing tactics at the table is beneficial.

For a one-shot, your Game Master can provide pregenerated heroes and a focused objective that resolves in 3 to 4 hours, such as hunting a monster or saving a Free City district. In a campaign, you develop oaths, allies, and gear across the Realms, facing escalating threats and recurring rivals. You only need some six-sided dice and a character idea. Online play is seamless on common tools; see options here: online play platforms.

Common questions

Do we need experience with Warhammer or D&D to play?

No prior experience is necessary. A professional Game Master will teach you the basics in minutes and manage the lore, allowing you to concentrate on choices and teamwork. Soulbound uses pools of six-sided dice, making it feel intuitive: roll, count successes, and describe bold actions. If you wish, your Game Master can provide pregenerated heroes so you can dive straight into the mission. Players familiar with D&D pick it up quickly, and newcomers do well because the rules promote clear goals and cooperative play.

How does Soulbound differ from D&D?

You begin as larger-than-life champions, so the tone is heroic from the very first session. Instead of relying on a single d20 roll, you create dice pools and count successes, which makes teamwork and resource management crucial. Group resources like Soulfire allow the party to execute pivotal moments, while increasing Doom heightens the tension when situations become perilous. Combat is quick and cinematic, and tactical maps are optional. Still undecided on a system? Compare Soulbound with other options here: see all game systems.

What types of heroes can we play?

You can be a Stormcast Eternal, an aelf from proud warlike cults or shadowy enclaves, a duardin such as a sky-merchant or flame-forged warrior, a human from the Cities of Sigmar, or even a nature-spirit champion. Your souls are bound into a fellowship, which explains why you fight and grow together. You can create custom characters with guidance, or request pregenerated options that suit your group’s vibe, like daring sky-pirates, stoic guardians, or clever scouts with potent magic.

What group size and session length are most effective?

Soulbound runs smoothly with 2 to 6 players. A focused one-shot typically takes 3 to 4 hours, allowing time for a set-piece battle and meaningful choices. Two or three players work well as heroes are powerful and encounters can be tailored to your party. For a first session, 3 to 5 players usually keeps the pace brisk. If your group enjoys tactical scenes or social intrigue, planning for the longer end of the range provides moments with room to breathe.

Is Soulbound appropriate for children or mixed age groups?

Yes. The setting can be intense, but a professional Game Master can adjust the tone to bright heroism, fade to black on harm, and focus on daring rescues rather than grim details. Clear goals and teamwork provide younger players with a strong role at the table. Before the game, share any content boundaries and preferred themes. Looking for a high-adventure romp or a hopeful mystery? Your Game Master will tailor it to your needs. For style preferences, you can browse GM playstyles.

Which edition of the rules or books will you be using?

Sessions utilise the current Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound rules from Cubicle 7, with any official updates applied. You do not need to purchase or read anything beforehand. Your Game Master provides character sheets, reference handouts, and all necessary materials. If your group requests options from popular supplements, the Game Master can include them when suitable, and will offer straightforward summaries to keep choices clear. The aim is smooth play, not rules lookup.

What players have to say

  • Tom was brilliant! He was really great with the kids and very patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The children asked the next day when we would be doing this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did an excellent job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a significant portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't fully understand how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his deep knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided a brilliant experience. Thanks!

  • The game was really engaging. I got a game as a present for my boyfriend, who is very keen on it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was an excellent GM who adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided, as they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left the game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another session with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players fully immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A nice and clear first experience with D&D. Amber was able to explain and guide the game effectively, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack routes was an enjoyable activity and provided great insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.
