Savage Worlds

Want punchy, big-screen action with room for laughs and daring stunts? Savage Worlds delivers that pace across countless flavours, from Weird West shootouts to neon space capers to gritty monster hunts. Scenes move fast, choices remain meaningful, and everyone gets their moment in the spotlight. Expect chases, quick-thinking plans, cliffhangers, and clever use of gear. It’s easy to shift the tone from lighthearted to serious, while keeping things family-friendly. The result feels like an action movie night, only you’re steering the thrills.

A professional Game Master will tailor the setting, complexity, and safety tools to your group. It suits first-timers, busy teams, and seasoned players who want a cinematic pace. Two to six players works best, with 2 to 3 hour sessions for one-shots or the beginning of a longer tale. Ready to choose a guide for your table? How to play Savage Worlds

Your character’s skills and attributes use different dice, usually d4 to d12. When you attempt something risky, you roll that die. Heroes, known as Wild Cards, also roll a d6 and keep the higher result. Rolling a 4 is a success, with each additional +4 representing a stronger outcome. Dice can explode on their top face, allowing you to roll again and add the results. You earn and spend Bennies for rerolls or to soak damage. Fights and challenges occur in quick rounds with playing-card initiative and clear choices each turn.

For a one-shot, the Game Master can provide pre-generated characters, teach the rules as you progress, and focus on a concise mission with a significant set piece. In a campaign, you gain Advances, unlock new Edges, and observe relationships and rivalries develop between adventures. You bring a character concept and a readiness to improvise. The Game Master provides the world, encounters, maps or theatre of the mind, and tools for online play like VTTs listed here: online platforms.

Common questions

Do I need to know Savage Worlds before we start playing?

No. Your Game Master will explain the rules at the table and can provide pre-made characters. You just need a character concept and a willingness to take bold actions. The core checks are straightforward, using different dice sizes along with a Wild Die for heroes. Bennies allow you to reroll or stabilise your character when things get tough. After a few rolls, most groups feel at ease. New players and mixed-experience tables grasp it quickly while keeping the focus on story and action.

Which edition will a Game Master use, SWADE or Deluxe?

Most of our Game Masters run the Adventure Edition from 2018, often referred to as SWADE. It is the current ruleset and plays quickly. If your group prefers the Deluxe Edition, please ask in advance. Many GMs can accommodate it or convert older material on the fly. As a player, you do not need to own any books. Your GM will provide character sheets and will highlight any minor rules differences, such as how certain Edges or powers function. The spirit of play remains the same either way: quick and pulpy.

How does Savage Worlds differ from D&D?

Both are enjoyable, but they have a different feel. Savage Worlds is designed for quick, cinematic scenes across various genres, rather than being confined to a single fantasy setting. Characters are created using Edges and Hindrances instead of fixed classes. Heroes roll a Wild Die and can use Bennies for crucial moments. Dice can explode, allowing for bold plans to yield significant rewards, and enemies can fall quickly. Combat involves a limited number of Wounds instead of large hit point pools, which makes fights shorter. Magic and equipment are simplified, and stunts are encouraged. If you appreciate fast turns and inventive tricks, this system truly shines.

What genres can we explore with Savage Worlds?

Almost anything. The core rules support pulp adventure, Weird West, hardboiled noir, post-apocalyptic road trips, modern monster hunting, swashbuckling, and far-future space action. Your Game Master selects or creates a backdrop, then adjusts setting rules to match the tone, from gritty to high-adventure. You do not need to purchase setting books to enjoy a one-shot. If you’re looking for inspiration for themes to request, browse the genre ideas here: genres overview. Let your GM know the vibe you want, and they will customise a scenario.

Is it appropriate for children or mixed-age groups?

Yes. A professional Game Master can create a lighter atmosphere and maintain clear, upbeat scenes. Rules can be learned through play, and pre-made characters lessen preparation for younger players. The Bennies system encourages fun ideas and teamwork, keeping kids engaged. Any violence can be presented like a Saturday matinee, emphasising daring rescues, chases, and clever problem-solving. Safety tools and content check-ins ensure everyone remains comfortable. Families and mixed-age birthday groups often have a fantastic time with this game.

How unpredictable or lethal is combat in this system?

It is thrilling yet measured. Exploding dice can lead to significant moments, so a fortunate hit or a daring move might quickly change the outcome. Rather than tracking large hit point totals, heroes monitor a Shaken state and a few Wounds. This keeps battles intense without dragging on. Players receive Bennies to reroll or to lessen damage, and the GM adjusts encounters to match your tone, from adventurous knockouts to darker firefights. Anticipate swift resolutions, clear consequences, and opportunities to retreat or negotiate when it suits the narrative.

Do we need miniatures, maps, or a VTT to play?

Savage Worlds functions effectively with or without a grid. Many GMs utilise tokens or miniatures for clarity during chases and shootouts, but theatre of the mind is also suitable for quick scenes. For online play, your GM can host the session on popular virtual tabletops and provide the necessary assets. If you have a preference, please mention it when booking. You can view common online options here: online platforms. The aim is clear visuals and quick turns, not intricate map preparation.

What players have to say

  • Tom was brilliant! He was really great with the kids and very patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The children asked the next day when we would be doing this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did an excellent job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a significant portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't fully understand how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his deep knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided a brilliant experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was really engaging. I got a game as a present for my boyfriend, who is very keen on it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was an excellent GM who adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided, as they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left the game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another session with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players fully immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A nice and clear first experience with D&D. Amber was able to explain and guide the game effectively, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack routes was an enjoyable activity and provided great insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.
