Numenera

Numenera immerses you in the Ninth World, a billion years in the future. The landscape is built upon the remnants of long-lost civilisations. The tone is one of bright curiosity with a touch of the bizarre. Sessions focus on discovery, makeshift solutions, and moments of wonder when a piece of alien technology alters everything. A professional Game Master leads you through ruins, deserts, and living machines. They present mysteries and assign purpose to each discovery. This world rewards questions and daring choices more than flawless plans.

Ideal for first-time players, returning veterans, and mixed groups. The rules remain light, allowing you to concentrate on the story, problem-solving, and character interactions. It accommodates 2 to 6 players in a 3 to 4 hour session, whether in person or online. Perfect for birthdays, family gatherings, or team-building sessions, shared discovery truly shines. Browse our Game Masters to find someone passionate about exploration, amazing technology, and creative improvisation.

How to play Numenera

At the table, you roll a d20 when the outcome is uncertain. The GM sets a difficulty. You can lower it with skills, good tools, help from allies, or by pushing yourself. Meet or exceed the final target number and you succeed. Players roll, not the GM. Your character uses three stat pools to fuel effort. One-use cyphers twist scenes in clever ways. Now and then, the GM offers an intrusion, a surprise complication that grants XP if you accept it.

Bring a short character idea and a willingness to try unconventional solutions. A professional Game Master can provide prebuilt characters, teach the rules in minutes, track cyphers and artefacts, and keep the world moving. A one-shot tackles a single ruin and a clear question, with a strong finish in one evening. A campaign follows your discoveries over time as factions react and artefacts reshape you. To match tone, browse GM playstyles before you book.

Common questions

Do I need to know the rules or the lore of the Ninth World?

No preparation required. A professional Game Master will teach you the basics in minutes: set a difficulty, reduce it with training, tools, or assistance, then roll a d20 to meet the target. Characters utilise Might, Speed, and Intellect pools along with a straightforward concept. You can opt for a prebuilt character sheet or create one quickly at the table. There’s no need for prior knowledge of the setting; exploring cultures and unusual technology is part of the enjoyment. The GM will clarify any unfamiliar terms during play, allowing you to participate confidently from the start.

Which edition do you run, and can you use 1st edition?

Most of our Game Masters use the 2018 Discovery and Destiny rules by default. If you prefer the first edition, they can run that as well or adapt older material. The editions are quite similar, so adventures, creatures, and items transfer smoothly. Your 1e character concept will feel familiar in 2e. Before the session, the GM will confirm which book they are using and provide a brief summary of any relevant differences for your game.

How does Numenera compare to D&D?

Only players roll dice. The GM sets a difficulty, which you can reduce using skills, useful gear, or by spending Effort from your stat pools. Progress is made through discoveries and choices rather than simply counting treasure. Loot is often single-use technology that encourages bold ideas instead of hoarding. Conflicts resolve quickly, and lateral solutions are encouraged. The GM can introduce twists with intrusions, but these are collaborative prompts, not traps, and you always have agency in how they play out.

What are cyphers, and how do they affect gameplay?

Cyphers are one-time use pieces of ancient technology, biotech curiosities, or nanotech anomalies. They allow you to perform something dramatic immediately, such as bypassing a barrier, saving a companion, or turning a hazard to your advantage. You are encouraged to use them frequently and then seek out more. Carry limits ensure they are rotated, keeping your options varied. The GM assists in identifying effects at a pace that suits the narrative and maintains straightforward tracking, ensuring the flow of play remains seamless.

Can you adjust the weirdness and technology feel for us?

Yes. Numenera’s strangeness can be vibrant and awe-inspiring or more subdued and unsettling. Your Game Master can focus on sleek nanotech, clanking salvage, living crystal, or any aesthetic you prefer. They will discuss content preferences and avoid elements you wish to skip, such as body horror. To see how different GMs handle tone and pacing, explore playstyle profiles here: GM playstyles.

Is Numenera suitable for children or groups with varying experience levels?

It functions exceptionally well. The rules are straightforward, turns are clear, and teamwork is more important than in-depth system mastery. A professional Game Master can maintain a PG rating, minimise graphic detail, and concentrate on puzzles, exploration, and character interactions. New players achieve quick, satisfying victories through cyphers and clear target numbers, while experienced players appreciate creative problem-solving and immersive world prompts. If attention spans differ, the GM frames scenes tightly to maintain momentum and keep the spotlight shifting.

What are GM intrusions, and can I decline them?

An intrusion is a twist the GM presents, such as a floor panel giving way or a rival arriving ahead of schedule. If you accept it, the scene becomes more engaging and you earn XP. You are never obliged to accept one. You can opt out by spending XP, and the GM will adapt without penalising your choice. Before the game, the GM clarifies how frequently they will use intrusions and ensures they remain fair, relevant, and focused on providing enjoyable choices.

What players have to say

  • Joran had 6 children aged 12 completely engaged for the full four hours. Most of them were playing for the first time. They were actively entertained from start to finish. At no point did anyone seem bored or irritated. Joran was also perfectly prepared and had excellent game materials.

    Haiko

  • Ruby was fantastic; this was our group’s first DnD experience, and she helped everyone grasp the rules and enjoy themselves.

    Adam

  • We had a fantastic time, the lads really enjoyed their campaign and Evan was excellent. I would definitely recommend Evan. Thank you!

    Annick

  • Tom was brilliant! He was really great with the kids and very patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The children asked the next day when we would be doing this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did an excellent job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a significant portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't fully understand how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his deep knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.
