At the table, gameplay flows like a fantastic session of story-driven fantasy: character moments, set-piece battles, and meaningful teamwork. It’s welcoming for newcomers and rewarding for seasoned players, making it perfect for birthdays and team-building days, and it’s easy to enjoy whether online or in person. Ready to play? Meet professional Game Masters who run Fabula Ultima with various styles and vibes.

How to play Fabula Ultima

You roll polyhedral dice to tackle challenges, typically using two dice selected from your character’s key stats, adding bonuses, and aiming to meet a target number set by the Game Master. On your turn, you describe your action, whether it’s moving, attacking, casting a spell, supporting an ally, or attempting something clever, then roll to see the outcome. Combat operates in rounds with initiative, but the emphasis remains on cinematic action and teamwork. Many groups also utilise a pool of points to enhance rolls during dramatic moments.

You bring a character concept, select a role with unique techniques, choose equipment and spells, and establish bonds with your party. A professional Game Master crafts evocative scenes, memorable adversaries, and provides clear direction, employing theatre of the mind or simple maps. One-shots highlight quick character creation, a focused storyline, and a climactic boss fight. Campaigns allow you to grow, unlock new options, and develop relationships over time. If you value the atmosphere at the table, explore GM playstyles to find the perfect match.

Common questions

Do we need experience with JRPGs or knowledge of the rules?

No. A professional Game Master guides you as you play. The core mechanic is straightforward: choose two of your character’s attributes, roll those dice, add any bonuses, and aim to meet a target number. Teamwork is essential, and you can utilise a shared pool of points to influence dramatic moments. If you're familiar with Final Fantasy or anime tropes, you'll catch the vibe, but it's not necessary. Come prepared with a hero concept and a readiness to collaborate, and you’re good to go.

What group size and session length are most effective?

Fabula Ultima is designed for 3 to 4 players, but it also accommodates 2 or 5. Sessions typically last between 180 to 240 minutes, allowing for character development, an engaging set piece, and a fulfilling conclusion. One-shots feature brief introductions followed by a climactic battle. Campaign sessions follow a similar rhythm, providing space for character growth between key moments. If you require a shorter session, the Game Master can adjust encounters and streamline scenes to ensure the story remains impactful.

How does Fabula Ultima differ from D&D?

Both are fantasy adventures, but Fabula Ultima focuses more on cinematic scenes and emotions rather than strict tactical grids. Your relationships have mechanical significance, and the group earns points for crucial boosts. Roles and techniques are adaptable, making it simple to create a mage-knight or gunner-alchemist. Battles are presented as story moments with clear stakes, rather than prolonged attrition. You still roll for initiative and make impactful decisions, but the gameplay emphasises stylish action, teamwork, and character arcs reminiscent of a JRPG.

Is it appropriate for children or mixed-age groups?

Yes. The tone is bright and heroic by default, and the rules are easy to grasp. Ages 10 and up can play with some guidance, while those aged 12 and older can manage most choices on their own. A professional Game Master can modify content lines and veils, maintain a fast pace in combat, and emphasise friendship and hope rather than darker themes. If your group prefers a gentler or more intense experience, let us know at the start so the story, villains, and visuals can be adjusted to suit your comfort level.

How quick is character creation and what can we play?

For a one-shot, expect around 30 to 60 minutes to go from idea to a table-ready hero. You select a concept, choose a role with unique techniques, gather gear or spells, and establish bonds with your party. The game supports vibrant archetypes, combo-focused builds, and meaningful dynamics like rivals becoming allies or mentor and protégé relationships. Campaigns introduce more options as you level up, but the process remains straightforward and guided, allowing you to concentrate on personality, style, and how your team comes together. Learn more about GM styles at playstyles.

Does it function well online and what tools are utilised?

It runs smoothly online. The system is light on maps and tracking, so video chat plus a simple shared sheet is often sufficient. For groups that prefer visuals, a virtual tabletop with tokens and basic templates works well. Dice can be rolled in chat or with built-in rollers, and the Game Master will provide any necessary handouts. What players have to say

  • Tom was brilliant! He was really great with the kids and very patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The children asked the next day when we would be doing this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did an excellent job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a significant portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't fully understand how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his deep knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided a brilliant experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was really engaging. I got a game as a present for my boyfriend, who is very keen on it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was an excellent GM who adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided, as they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left the game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another session with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players fully immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A nice and clear first experience with D&D. Amber was able to explain and guide the game effectively, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack routes was an enjoyable activity and provided great insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.
