Dungeon Crawl Classics

Dungeon Crawl Classics is dark fantasy with a pulp heart. Every delve feels raw and risky. You weigh torches and rations, probe strange idols, and face monsters that do not follow neat rules. Magic is powerful but unpredictable, and every roll can twist the story in surprising ways. Sessions move quickly, with clear stakes, table rulings, and significant consequences. You come to explore and outwit as much as to fight, and the rewards feel well-earned.

Great for curious first-timers and veterans seeking a tougher crawl. It shines for birthday groups and company teams as it encourages teamwork and laughter when plans go awry. A professional Game Master can adjust the tone from grim to gonzo, teach as you go, and maintain a brisk pace. Ready to choose your guide? Meet our Game Masters.

How to play Dungeon Crawl Classics

The core is straightforward. The Game Master outlines the situation. You state what you attempt to do. Typically, you roll a twenty-sided die, add a bonus, and aim to meet or exceed a target number. Attacks, saves, and checks function this way. DCC also employs a dice chain like d16 or d24 when advantages or penalties come into play. Critical hits, fumbles, and spell outcomes derive from colourful tables, making results feel unpredictable and memorable.

You bring a character concept, curiosity, and a willingness to take risks. The Game Master provides the adventure, maps, rulings, and all the unusual dice. One-shots often utilise the famous funnel, where each player controls a handful of zero-level villagers, and the survivors evolve into heroes. Campaigns concentrate on hard-earned levels, patrons, scars, and treasures that influence your decisions between sessions. For remote tables, see online play options.

Common questions

Do I need to know the rules or have the funky dice?

No. A professional Game Master teaches you what you need as you play. The core loop is straightforward and quick to learn. Character sheets are clear, and you will only use a few numbers for each roll. DCC uses unusual dice like d16 and d24, but you do not need to bring any. Your Game Master provides physical sets or uses a digital roller that manages them for you. For remote tables, see supported tools on online play platforms.

What is a "funnel," and is it necessary for us to play one?

A funnel is an exciting zero-level kickoff where each player takes charge of a few ordinary townsfolk. You venture into a perilous dungeon, and those who survive become your level 1 heroes, complete with scars and stories. It's ideal for one-shots and new groups as it quickly teaches the game and fosters immediate investment. However, running a funnel isn’t mandatory. Campaigns can begin at level 1 or 2, using pre-generated characters if you prefer. Both styles are suitable for a 3 to 4 hour session.

How does Dungeon Crawl Classics differ from D&D 5E?

DCC is more unpredictable and has a classic feel. There are fewer safety nets, leading to greater highs and lows. Exploration, resource management, and decisions made at the table are more significant. Warriors can perform Mighty Deeds that allow for improvisational stunts. Thieves depend on luck and skills that vary by background. Magic is unpredictable, with tables influencing each casting. There are fewer character options on paper, but more opportunities for discovery during play. The aim isn't balance, but rather creating tension. If you enjoy taking risks, solving puzzles, and experiencing memorable dice rolls, DCC truly excels.

How lethal is it? Will my character meet their end?

Low levels can be perilous, particularly in a funnel, where losses are anticipated and enjoyable. Beyond level 1, caution, scouting, and inventive strategies are just as crucial as your armour. The Luck ability can be utilised to shift the balance when it matters most. A skilled Game Master signals threats and adjusts danger to suit your group's comfort level. You will encounter genuine stakes, but you will receive fair hints and opportunities to withdraw. Death is a possibility, but survival feels well-deserved.

How does magic function in DCC?

Spellcasting is powerful and unpredictable. You roll to cast, and the result determines how strong the effect is, or whether it goes wrong. Wizards have fickle magic, so each spell behaves a bit differently for them, and repeated casting can lead to corruption. Clerics call upon their deity and risk disapproval if they push their luck. There are interesting spell and misfire tables, but you do not need to memorise them. Your Game Master will guide outcomes swiftly at the table.

Is DCC suitable for children or groups with varying levels of experience?

Yes. The rules are easy to grasp at the table, and the game encourages teamwork and curiosity. The tone can range from spooky to light-hearted, with less gore and more problem-solving for younger players. Experienced players appreciate the improvisation while newcomers learn through experience. Let your professional Game Master know what atmosphere you prefer, and they will customise encounters, clues, and consequences to suit. What players have to say

  • Tom was brilliant! He was really great with the kids and very patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The children asked the next day when we would be doing this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did an excellent job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a significant portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't fully understand how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his deep knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided a brilliant experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was really engaging. I got a game as a present for my boyfriend, who is very keen on it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was an excellent GM who adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided, as they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left the game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another session with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players fully immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A nice and clear first experience with D&D. Amber was able to explain and guide the game effectively, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack routes was an enjoyable activity and provided great insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.
