How to play Coyote & Crow
You roll pools of d12s based on your character’s traits and skills, aiming for a number of successes against a difficulty set by the Game Master. On your turn, you state your intention, the Game Master sets the stakes and consequences, and you roll. Strong results open up options like extra effects, speed, or valuable details. Complications shape the story rather than halt it, ensuring momentum remains high.
Players bring a character idea, a willingness to collaborate, and some d12s, or use a digital roller. A professional Game Master provides the setting, scenes, helpful handouts or maps, and safety tools. For one-shots, expect premade characters and a quick rules walkthrough. For ongoing play, you create characters together and build connections to people, factions, and places.
A one-shot is a focused mission or mystery with a clear goal and a satisfying conclusion in about 3 to 4 hours. A campaign allows arcs to develop, mixing travel, diplomacy, and personal growth between high-stakes moments. Both work seamlessly online with shared dice rollers and virtual tabletops. Common questions
What sets Coyote & Crow apart from D&D?
Coyote & Crow is a science fiction game that incorporates living traditions, rather than being set in a medieval fantasy world. You take on the roles of individuals from advanced Indigenous nations, tackling challenges through community connections, investigation, travel, and, when necessary, combat. The rules utilise pools of d12s and focus on counting successes, allowing scenes to progress swiftly and highlighting clever decisions over extensive gear lists. There are no classes or lengthy spell lists. You shape your character through skills, relationships, and personal gifts. If you appreciate political choices, mysteries, and stories driven by culture, this game truly excels. Looking for a game that emphasises combat, intrigue, or exploration? Do I need cultural awareness to play respectfully?
No. You bring curiosity and care. A professional Game Master sets expectations, offers brief introductions to names and places, and checks in about tone and boundaries. The game focuses on Indigenous futures without relying on stereotypes. You portray capable protagonists, not tropes or outsiders. Pronunciations, customs, and imagery are introduced as needed, and any unfamiliar element is explained at the table. We use safety tools and debriefs so everyone feels heard. Mixed groups are welcome. If your group has specific heritage or themes to include or avoid, inform your Game Master during setup.
What types of characters and abilities can we play?
You can be scientists, guardians, scouts, envoys, artists, or community leaders. Many characters use advanced tools like drones, biotech, and protective gear. Some possess extraordinary gifts linked to the setting’s mysteries, though this is optional. Power manifests less as flashy spells and more as heightened perception, resilience, or unique talents that create opportunities in the story. You develop your concept based on skills, values, and connections to people and places, then evolve through play. Your Game Master assists in linking your goals to factions, locations, and threats, ensuring every scene offers your character a meaningful choice.
How detailed are the rules and what dice do we use?
It sits in the middle. You create a pool of d12s from your traits and skills, roll them, and count how many meet or exceed a target. Strong results allow you to add detail or speed things up, while mixed results introduce new twists to keep the story moving. Most rolls cover an entire action, not tiny steps, so table talk remains focused on plans and outcomes. Character sheets track a few key numbers and special perks. If you prefer fast scenes with clear consequences over precise grid tactics, this system works well after a brief explanation.
How many players are there and how long does a session last?
It works with 2 to 6 players. Most groups prefer 3 to 5 for consistent spotlight time. A standard session lasts 3 to 4 hours. Duos feel very personal, which is great for deep character arcs. Six players provide a larger team and a broader range of skills, which your Game Master balances with clear scene framing. One-shots focus on a single mission or mystery that can be completed in one sitting. Campaigns introduce downtime, travel, and politics between high-stakes moments.
Is it suitable for children and groups with varying experience levels?
Yes. It works well with older children and teenagers, and the tone can remain hopeful and non-graphic. The core moves are straightforward to learn, allowing newcomers to pick it up quickly, while experienced players have the opportunity for clever tactics and roleplay. A professional Game Master can provide pre-generated characters, safety tools, and a clear tutorial during the session. Families and friend groups with diverse backgrounds thrive here.
