Cairn

Cairn RPG · Cairn 2nd Edition

Cairn

Cairn is classic fantasy designed for exploration, danger, and meaningful choices. Play cautious adventurers mapping wild woods and forgotten tombs, scavenging tools, and testing rumours at the table. Sessions feel immediate and tactile, with light rules that prioritise the narrative. Every torch, ration, and path matters. Combat is quick and frightening, but the greatest rewards come from curiosity, negotiation, and clever plans. A professional Game Master sets up a living environment that reacts to you, so your decisions shape what you discover and what follows.

Ideal for first-time players and seasoned veterans alike, Cairn excels in tight one-shots and streamlined campaigns. It accommodates 2 to 6 players over 2 to 3 hours, whether in person or online. For birthdays and corporate teams, its clear stakes and teamwork-friendly challenges engage everyone quickly. If you seek thoughtful exploration without a rules lecture, this is it. Browse Game Masters who run Cairn and choose a style that suits your group.

How to play Cairn

Cairn uses a d20 when an outcome is risky. You roll equal to or under an ability score to succeed. Weapons roll simple damage dice, and armour reduces incoming harm. Most of the play is conversation: you describe what you try, the Game Master clarifies the situation and stakes, then calls for a roll only when needed. Turns move briskly, with time, light, and noise tracked so choices matter. Exploration procedures cover travel, rest, and discovery, keeping the world grounded and tense.

You bring a lightweight character, a few pieces of gear, and a curious, careful mindset. The Game Master brings a dangerous location or wild region with maps, clues, and factions that react to you. In a one-shot, you tackle a single delve or route with a clear goal and a tight clock. In a campaign, you return to the area, map new ground, earn boons, suffer scars, make allies, and watch consequences unfold. To match your taste for grit, puzzles, or roleplay, see GM playstyles.

Common questions

Do we need to know the rules before we start playing?

You can arrive with no preparation. Cairn is easy to learn and quick to teach. A professional Game Master will assist with character creation in just a few minutes and explain the few core rolls as you play. Most of the game unfolds through conversation, with dice only used when the outcome is unclear. The emphasis is on your attempts, the tools you utilise, and the risks you take. New players adapt quickly, while seasoned players appreciate the straightforward, efficient pacing.

How does Cairn differ from D&D?

Cairn is classless and streamlined. Your role develops through gear and choices, rather than an extensive list of powers. Combat is swift and perilous, making caution and planning essential. The game emphasises exploration, tracking resources such as light and time, and creatively solving problems instead of relying on set-piece battles. Advancement feels tangible, with discoveries, scars, and relationships influencing your character more than significant power increases. If you prefer rulings over rules and tense explorations, it offers a different experience compared to D&D.

Which edition will the Dungeon Master run?

Both the First Edition from 2021 and the Second Edition from 2025 are available for play. Many professional Game Masters offer 2e for its improved procedures, and can run 1e upon request. If you have a preference, please mention it when booking so that preparation aligns with your choice. You can browse facilitators who run Cairn and view their notes on the editions here: find a Game Master.

What group size and session length are most effective?

Cairn runs smoothly with 2 to 6 players in a 2 to 3 hour slot. This allows enough time to scout a site, make meaningful choices, and reach a conclusion without feeling rushed. Smaller groups feel more surgical and sneaky, while larger tables resemble a scrappy crew. For birthdays or team events, the Game Master keeps turns brisk so everyone gets their moment in the spotlight. If you’re looking for a longer delve or a short campaign, that can be easily arranged.

Is Cairn suitable for children or mixed-age groups?

Yes. The rules are straightforward and light, and the tone is easy to adjust. Older children and teenagers tend to enjoy it, especially when playing with adults. Your Game Master can reduce the scare factor, steer clear of gore, and focus on puzzles, teamwork, and exploration. If you have a specific atmosphere in mind, mention it when booking or choose someone whose table vibe aligns with it here: see GM playstyles.

Are there classes or extensive spell lists in Cairn?

No classes. Characters are defined by abilities, straightforward gear, and what you learn through play. You won’t be sifting through lengthy spell lists. Magic feels both mysterious and practical, often discovered in the world as unusual items, rituals, or mentors rather than selected from a menu. This keeps choices focused on the situation at hand and your strategy, rather than on character build jargon, making it easier for new players to get involved.

What players have to say

  • Tom was brilliant! He was really great with the kids and very patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The children asked the next day when we would be doing this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did an excellent job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a significant portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't fully understand how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but see it as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his deep knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided a brilliant experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was really engaging. I got a game as a present for my boyfriend, who is very keen on it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was an excellent GM who adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided, as they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left the game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another session with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players fully immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A nice and clear first experience with D&D. Amber was able to explain and guide the game effectively, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack routes was an enjoyable activity and provided great insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.
